Dr. Antonio Di Giulio

Dr. Antonio Di Giulio is currently Head of the Strategy Unit in the Bioeconomy Directorate of the Research and Innovation Directorate-General at the European Commission.

He started his professional career as an agricultural economist with the United States Foreign Agricultural Service- Department of Agriculture, (FAS/USDA) in Rome, Italy, working  primarily on commodity and food products market analysis as well as on scientific and  regulatory aspects including food safety and WTO trade issues.

Prior to his post with the European Commission, he was Principal Administrator with the  International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies, (CIHEAM) an in Paris based inter-governmental organisation, linked to the OECD, where he worked on policies and research programmes on agricultural and food production systems of the Mediterranean region. His duties included the co-ordination of research programmes, and the supervision of CIHEAM Annual report on “development and agri-food policies in the Mediterranean region”.

He holds a Master degree in Agricultural sciences and a specialized Master degree in rural development, programmes and projects. He has a Doctoral degree in food economics. Elected member of the Accademia dei Georgofili, Florence (Italy). 

 

 

Prof. Dr. Justus Wesseler

Prof. Dr. Justus Wesseler is professor of Agriculture Economics and Rural Policy, Wageningen University, The Netherlands. Until the end of 2013, Prof Dr. Justus Wesseler was chair in Agricultural and Food Economics at the Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan, Technische Universität München. He is member of the International Consortium of Applied Bioeconomy Research (ICABR), co-editor of AgBioForum, and coordinator of the EU funded collaborative project Practical Implementation of Coexistence in Europe (PRICE). His research work on coexistence, biotechnology, and related regulations has been published in more than 80 contributions to peer reviewed journals and books. His research work is on the economic relevance of the bio economy, value chain economics, and regulatory economics including issues related to coexistence.

PhD Delia-Gabriela Dimitriu, PhD

Dr Delia Dimitriu is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on aviation’s environmental impact, with focus on sustainability. Her main activity is conducted in C-E Europe, South America and Asia.

Dr.Delia Dimitriu has an interesting background in infrastructure related projects, environmental management for business community, policy instruments and decision making process. She also works on biofuels from biomass, thus relating to agriculture sector.

Delia has particular interest in climate change related to aviation sector: EU/ETS, offset programmes, carbon footprint and fuel management. Delia was part of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) team that won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for its work on climate change and currently she is a member of the  IPCC Fifth Assessment Report; WG3-Mitigation, Chapter 8-Transport (2010-2014).

Recently  Delia started work with Airbus CE to research the feasibility of commercializing bio-fuel made from several feedstocks. The sustainability assessment and LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) are an important part of this work.  Delia’s  most important achievement related to this topic is the project Romanian Camelina Value Chain, in which she is required to prove the sustainability of the chain from agricultural aspect to technology and aeronautical phase. However, marginal and contaminated land are an important part of this work, as well as investigating several methods and technologies to achieve sustainable agriculture.

 

 

Dr. Krassimira Anguelova

Dr. Krassimira Anguelova joined CABI in November 2007 and since then she has directly managed sales in Central and Eastern Europe, CIS and Middle East from her home office in Bulgaria. From the beginning of 2014 she has been promoted to CABI Senior Sales Manager for Europe, Central Asia and Middle East. In her previous professional career, she was a university professor in Information Sciences and Academic Librarianship at Sofia University in Bulgaria for 12 years.

Dr. Anguelova was also a lecturer at City University of Seattle from 2004 until 2007. She also has 8 years’ experience as an information specialist at The Central Library of Medical University, Sofia. Her professional background and broad network of contacts in European academic community and in library associations gave Dr. Anguelova excellent preparation for the position at CABI. She has published 67 scientific papers in Bulgarian and foreign scientific journals.

 

 

Dr. Medana Zamfir

Bachelor in Biochemistry, Master in Enzimology.

Since 1996 Dr. Medana Zamfir has worked for the Institute of Biology Bucharest (since 2007 as a Scientific researcher I). Dr. Zamfir has been awarded a Magna cum laude distinction for her PhD in 2003 by the Romanian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Biology Bucharest. In 2006 she became the scientific secretary and member of the advisory and scientific boards of the Institute of Biology in Bucharest. Dr. Zamfir was a co-organizer of the „Flemish-Romanian workshop on lactic acid bacteria: Biodiversity and functional properties”, held on November, 23, 2004 in Brussels. Her research topics involve: diversity of lactic acid bacteria in traditional fermented foods; study of bacteriocins and exopolysaccharides produced by lactic acid bacteria; applications as pro- and prebiotics; biochemical and genetic studies of some microorganisms under stress conditions; taxonomic identification of lactic acid bacteria.

Dr. Medana Zamfir was the coordinator of several national and international projects and author or co-author of over 50 articles in national or international journals; one set of articles was awarded in 2006 with the National Prize „Emil Racoviţă” of the Romanian Academy of Sciences.

Mr. Cristian Pârvan

Mr. Pârvan was the President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Călăraşi from 1990 until 2007. He graduated from University Politehnica of Bucharest, Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers and also from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest and obtained a certification from the Control Data Corporation San Diego, USA in 1974.

In 1992 he became President of the Romanian Association for Quality and in 1996 Deputy Secretary of World Trade Center General Association. Since 2002 Mr. Pârvan has activated as Secretary General of AOAR (Romanian Businessmen's Association).

 

 

Prof. FRANCO FAMIANI

Franco Famiani graduated in Agricultural Science with full marks and honours in 1983, at the Faculty of Agriculture - University of Perugia (Italy).

From 1988 to 1990, he worked at the Olive Growing Research Institute of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Spoleto (PG), and worked on several projects concerning olive.

In 1990, he joined the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Perugia as a Researcher. Currently, he is Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences in which he teaches subjects regarding tree fruit cultivation and science. From 2006 to 2011 he also thought the same subjects at the University of Malta.

His research work has involved the following topics:

  • characterization and evaluation of olive varieties;
  • physiology, ripening, training systems, irrigation, soil management, harvesting and oil quality of olive;
  • optimising of the cultural systems for some fruit tree species (apple, olive, kiwifruit, chestnut);
  • propagation and "in vitro" regeneration of fruit species;
  • use of growth regulators on fruit trees (kiwifruit and chestnut);
  • photosynthesis and source-sink relationships in fruit trees;
  • physiology and biochemistry of fruits, with particular regard given to organic acid metabolism;
  • role of calcium availability, nitrogen nutrition, light and growth regulators on oxalic acid metabolism and qualitative characteristics and storability of fruits in Actinidia deliciosa.

He has collaborated with several research institutions, both at national and International level.

He was the recipient of a British Council Fellowship awarded to work at the University of Sheffield - UK.

He has collaborated, as expert, in several international project regarding olive, carried out in Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon, Croatia, Greece, Tunisia, Algeria.

He has given talks at national and international scientific meetings.

He is author of more than 200 papers, many of them published in international referred journals.

He has acted as referee for several international journals.

He has been in charge of several research projects funded by either public institutions or private companies.

He has been President or member of scientific committees in National and International Congresses.

He is a member of the International Society for Horticultural Science, the Italian Horticultural Society and the National Academy for Olive and Olive Oil. He is the coordinator of the Olive Oil working group of the Italian Horticultural Society.

 

 

Dr. Stefan Toepfer 

Dr. Toepfer is currently Integrated Crop Management Advisor and Biological Control Research Scientist with CABI. His role as an advisor for integrated crop management (ICM) is to work with local partners in various developing, transitional and developed countries, facilitating the improvement of agricultural practices. Dr. Toepfer is implementing ICM projects in DPR Korea, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Rwanda, PR China and Eastern Europe. In Hungary he provides technical support to reduce the use of pesticides and help farmers implement more sustainable crop management practices, particularly the use of biological control. His role as a research scientist involves work on biological control and integrated pest management of agricultural insect pests. Dr. Toepfer’s background is in biology, ecology, behaviour and the study of host ranges of insects. He also focuses on the ecology of parasitoids and entomopathogenic nematodes. His biological control project experience on agricultural insect pests particularly includes the Apple Blossom Weevil and the Western Corn Rootworm. He manages and develops collaborative international projects in the mass production and use of biological control as a component of integrated pest management. He also undertakes individual or group training programmes in integrated pest management or biological control for international partners including extension experts, and farmers. Dr. Toepfer has consultancy experience in Central and Eastern Europe, Far East Asia and Eastern Africa, where he provides training in integrated pest management, pest and disease diagnosis, extension services, IPM technical guidelines, experimental design and writing theses. He has supervised numerous international BSc, MSc and PhD students (e.g. University of Godollo, Hungary; ETH Zurich, Switzerland; University of Szeged, Hungary; University of Kiel, Germany; University of Goettingen, Germany, University of Nice, France). He holds an adjunct professorship position at the University of Godollo, Hungary. Dr. Toepfer’s role also includes the development of technical dossiers, training manuals and scientific publications.

 

 

Dr Mekjell Meland, Norway 

Mekjell Meland is a professor in pomology and fruit tree physiology. He is currently employed with Norwegian Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Research located at Bioforsk Ullensvang, Western Norway. Whilst his experience and background is diverse across pome fruit and stone fruit research, in recent years he has concentrated on stone fruit research; in particular research on cherry cracking and the effects of covered cropping on cherries. Mekjell currently is involved in many international collaborations, active publishing in international journals and travels extensively for research. He works in close collaboration with the fruit industry.

 

 

 Judith Barrett, PhD

Dr Judith Barrett expertise lies in the field of environmental geo-chemistry, with particular interest in inorganic contaminants in soils and sediments.
Judi’S specialist area is in the geochemistry, mineralogy and solid-state speciation of potentially toxic metal and metalloid contaminants within the sediment matrix.  Her research work involves:

  • using a multidisciplinary approach to characterize of inorganic contaminant species (within sediments and soils , including both conventional wet digest and non-destructive spectroscopy techniques
  • the novel application of techniques, such as synchrotron radiation and ultra-filtration
  •  understanding and identifying mechanisms and drivers of low temperature geochemical  processes within  mineralogical phases both natural and contaminated sediments
  • the influence of inorganic elements on soil processes and the bioavailability and bioaccessibility of such elements as sediment is transport to different environments
  • the potential of metals and metalloids to move from the soil matrix into the food chain

She also has a number of years’ experience in agriculture, both in production and an advisory capacity.
Judi has presented oral papers at Goldschmidt and the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland conferences and has been an invited speaker at the ENSFI conference in Baia Mare.
She has published in a number of journals including Environmental Science and Technology, and has acted as reviewer for a number of international journals.
She is a member of the Geochemical Society, the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
